Madelyn 4 years

What a  fun year it was for Madelyn. Here are some of our special memories!

Madelyn and Allison interactions:
  • Madelyn likes to call her sister "Allison Balison"
  • Madelyn says "You guys got married because you love each other. I am going to marry Allison because I love her. I am going to marry her in two days!" :)
  • Madelyn told Allison she has chocolate milk asked then asked her, "Do you want some chocolate milk?" all while wearing the breastfriend, my nursing pillow :)
  • She is helpful with Allison - Gets diaper, wipes blanket with no fight.
  • Madelyn talks for Allison a lot saying Allison wants such and such. We think it will be a rude awaking when Allison starts talking for herself and Madelyn can no longer have her way with Allison.
  • Sometimes, she is so sweet with her sister sharing her blanket with Allison when Allison is sad. She also bad about giving Allison whatever she wants if Allison cries even when she didn’t want to share her toy.  This of course makes Allison think she can get whatever she wants by crying!
  • She and Allison love pretend driving the van. They have a ball in there and it's so cute to watch them. They both have learned to turn on the music all by themselves.
  • Madelyn is a great big sister and watches out for Allison so she doesn't go into the street. She'll even say to me, "Mom go get "something"" and then say "I'll watch Allison" so it's nice that she is always thinking about it.
The things she says:

  • Mommy that car is a broken car.  After looking over and over for this broken car she finally says that broken car is turning and I look and it's a convertible with its top down :)
  • Madelyn out of the blue said "I want to wear uptime clothes!" when she wanted to change out of her pajamas.
  • She'll ask "Rest with PJs or No?" to determine if she is taking a nap or going to bed for the night.
  • Madelyn was so cute when she asked if she could go to Connor's party and when I say yes, she shouted YEAH! as though  she couldn't believe she got to go! After his party she kept calling buzz light year "buzzyear!"
  • She says "Not we, right" instead of "Not us, right?"
  • She says "Where are them? instead of "where are they?"
  • Although she can say water just find she resorts back to her old ways when she says "wa-wa-melon" for watermelon.
  • I love how she says "pan-no" for Piano.
  • She'll say she wants an Elsa braid which is just a normal braid but its cute she calls it something special.
  • She says "I have an idea" and normally it actually is a good idea to solve a dilemma.
  • She likes to do special prayers which are really her just rambling about anything for a long time and then ends in a Amen. I love listening to her.
  • Randomly she said "Nice to meet you" and then shook my hand.
  • To her swimming instructor that was back for teaching in the summer she said, "Paige,  I love you!"
  • She said  "Mom, you don't JOKE people. I tell you this every day!" which is pretty true she did tell me this for many days straight.
  • "Aww he's a died ant" instead of "dead ant" and then says about  alive ant pulling the dead ant, "maybe he misses him."
Achievements:
  • Madelyn swam across the width of the pool without help 12/4/14. We were so proud of her!
  • Madelyn wrote first name on 1/14/2015
  • She moved up in swimming from Red to Orange June 4th! Only 3 years old and swimming! She took the Red level 4 times before passing it having started in August.
  • In May, Madelyn stopped wearing a pull up for night and has had very few accidents!
  • She can pump herself on the swing.
  • She played Soccer for the first time this Summer.
  • Madelyn continued to do Music Together with Allison all year.
  • Madelyn did gymnastics at Phenom August - May and loved it. She was getting quite good at it too.
  • She's gotten quite photogenic smiling nicely for the camera instead of a cheesy smile!

Things to remember this last year:
  • Madelyn is Frozen obsessed and knows all the songs. She even can tell you what happens in the movie before and after each song which is impressive since she has only seen it twice.
  • She can read the Frozen book by memory. It’s so fun to see her mimic inflections we use when reading it to her.
  • Madelyn has gotten into saying prayers at night and has them all memorized. She sometimes like to sing them and always corrects me when I say “ah-men” telling me to say “A-men.”
  • Madelyn will say “Mommy I have a question” and then ask about Rupunzel’s and Cinderella’s stepmoms.  She also asks lots of questions about why Anna and Elsa’s parents were lost at sea.She is certainly processing a lot.
  • Madelyn loves making us ice cream on the playset and sometimes pays us to eat it instead of having us pay her :)
  • Madelyn can also read "Just Going to the Dentist (Little Critter)" book almost word for word by memory.
  • She is good at letting Leia out
  • She is a very good explainer even when we don't understand she'll explain another way  and not get frustrated.
  • She loves wearing shoes that are not the same color!  People think she does this on accident but she does it for fun. She also started wearing her Mary Jane shoes without the strap to hold them on instead she puts her feet into them on top of the strap. I don't think it would be very comfortable but she's kept it up for a while now so she must be used to it.
  • She's really been a nice friend to the new neighbors, The Haynes, and is so happy they moved next door. All she wants to do is play with them and invite them over to our playset.  She is great about wanting to make them feel welcomed and included.
  • She likes to wear headbands but always wears them right where her forehead and hair meet. If I push it back to the top of her head, she gets mad and moves it back down. It's so funny since it doesn't do much to keep her hair out of her face but it's Madelyn's own style.
  • She is the most patient 3 year old I know! She's great about waiting and is patient with kids as well. She really doesn't get frustrated much which I admire so much. For the most part (realizing she still is little, she takes everything in stride.
Madelyn is such a sweet daughter, sister, cousin and friend. I can't wait to see who she becomes.

Proud of her puzzle she and Daddy did at the library
Loving her babies by the fire

Madelyn 3 years old

It's crazy to think that three years has gone by.  We've had so much fun with Madelyn.  It's also been so much fun seeing Madelyn interact with her sister.

The things she says:
  • "There's a BEAR!" over and over. We are told to get on the bed, the couch or in the closet to get away from the bear. She is so cute but will also tell us "It's a pretend bear" when she thinks we are really scared.
  • "Good night everybody!" she says with a smile.  We've been saying good night to five people or things lately as she crawls in bed.  Sometimes she says good night to some interesting things.  When we count down she likes to touch our fingers--her three to our three. The weirdest thing she says goodnight to is B-gohney-ya & we have no clue who it is or what it means but she is consistent and has been saying this for at least 6 months.
  • She also says "Have a good day" so sweetly and gives me a kiss when I drop her off for school and she also says it when I am shutting the door to her bedroom after I tuck her in.
  • "Daddy you frustrate me" when Brian couldn't push her in the car because he was busy.
  • Madelyn has a good sense of smell and more than once she has asked"what that's smell?" It smells like a cookie" when Brian went to give her a kiss. She knew right away that she had correctly smelled the cookie on his breath! What a stinker!
  • On the way home from Red Robin, Brian asked her to try to stay awake since we were almost home and she needed to go down for nap. With thumb in mouth, she shook her head no, and fell asleep!
  • She only says "NOla" not Granola bar.
  • When she says things that are clearly not correct like calling a fire truck a garbage struck. She'll say "It's kind of like that."
  • She started talking funny by saying stuff that sounds like a foreign language. She thinks it funny when she talks on and on and we look at her and say huh?
  • Sticky sticky bubblegum. She continues to sing ALL the TIME! She is getting good at singing her music together songs.
  • She isn't so good with saying her "S's" and says mock instead of smock and mile instead of smile. :)
  • Sometimes she'll tell us we have to vacuum because there is hair everywhere! :) Which is surprising since she still doesn't like the vacuum.
  • When I told Madelyn I couldn't read to her right then she said, "yes, you can mom. There's words on the page right there!" There were but I was still busy!
  • She calls avocado "avo-cay-doh" and Grandma and Grandpa  "gramma and baa-caa."
  • She is constantly calling Allison chubby cheeks.
  • She thought everyone's middle name was Jane. The funniest one was when she sternly yelled "Brian Jane Hartsell"
  • "Mom, Allison wants milk. Get out your milkies" :)
  • She asks us if we need privacy and tells us she needs privacy sometimes when she goes potty.
  • She kept asking her friend Eliza if she liked fairies since Eliza was watching Tinkerbell on the kindle.  Eliza kept saying no so Madelyn just kept asking her over and over again because it didn't make sense to her! She can be persistent.
  • We are pretty sure she's learned things sayings from school.
    • "Finish your milk first, mommy!" -- we never require her to finish her food/drink
    • "May I be excused?" -- we never require her to ask
    • "Someone smells stinky!"
  • She confuses single and plural nouns calling sunglasses "sunglass" and saying "mines" instead of mine.
 The things she does:
  • She is so cute with Allison wanting to teach her how to do the hand motions at music together.
  • She doesn't like to clean up and will tell us we don't have to clean up!
  • She loves collecting sticks and brings them home from many walks.
  • She locks the doors to rooms she goes in but is usually pretty good about opening them up when we ask.
  • She drives her in car and says she's at a stop light and that the light is red and waits.
  • Got crazy in May. Running around with lots of energy and making up her own language and thinking it's hilarious!  Brian and I weren't sure what happened to our laid back girl!
  • She loves to swing and do underdogs.
  • She is great at folding up blankets. She can even use her neck to get them pretty near perfect!
  • She is now playing by herself and loves playing in the kitchen and with her babies. She still favors her bald head baby dolls. She likes to swaddle them just like Allison.
  • She loves taking care of Allison--wiping her face, holding her in her lap, waking her up (but is great about only doing so when we say she can!)
  • She loves swimming and loves going under water!
  • She picks lots of clover flowers and brings them home for us. I guess there are nice things about having weeds around--flowers she can pick.
  • She loves watching Juliana's dance recitals especially "Shake, Shake Senora".
  • She is into dress up clothes especially ones that as she says "spin" or "dance!"
  • She loves to be outdoors and go on walks--sometimes she rides her tricycle or her scooter and other times she likes to ride beside Allison in the double stroller.
  • She is good at writing what looks like letters instead of scribbles.
  • She loves flip flops and always wants us to all wear our flip flops together. She also likes to wear mismatched flip flops and sometimes, we find that she is wearing two right shoes!
  • She loves waking up Allison and cuddling with her in her crib. It's so cute to see them interact together.
She continues to be a great sleeper and she was potty trained in less than a week!

Madelyn's 2 1/2 years old!

Madelyn turned two and a half a few days before Allison was born and she's learned a lot since she was two!

What She Knows and Does
  • She knows all her colors now but sometimes gets black and white mixed up.
  • She knows some shapes: circle, heart and square.  She knows how to make a diamond in her hand while singing Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star but can't seem to recognize it elsewhere.
  • She knows the letter E and will tell you it's for Elephant but still needs to work on other letters.
  • She is very good at pouring liquids back and forth. She loves to dump her water or milk into our water or milk and then wants to pour some back into her cup. She rarely spills!
  • She is big into taking turns. She loves to play with my hair or do my "makeup" but it's funny when she says "my turn" she'll insist that we physically change places even when she is just sitting next to me.
  • She is very interested in buckles (both her car seat & seat belts) and how they work.
  • She is good at making up games with a jump rope, ball or anything. It's fun to see her creativity.
  • She is very good at undressing herself and pretty good at dressing herself. Sometimes she puts a shirt on inside out or can't get her arm in. She is great at putting on her own pull up.
  • All the sudden in December, she started rolling up everything she could--mats, blankets, clothes. we have no idea why. Maybe it was something they were practicing at school but for awhile, we had to go search for our rolled up floor mats.
  • She loves to play in the car and pretend to drive.
  • She loves opening & closing the garage door using the opener while in the car.  Luckily she is good about waiting to close the garage door until after we are inside the garage although I am happy our garage door has a safety in case she doesn't wait--I can just imagine her closing it on our car.
  • She loves  blowing out candles and sometimes pretends they are her birthday candles by singing Happy Birthday and then blowing them out.
  • Her favorite books include: Pete the Cat and his White Shoes and Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons, Ain't Going To Paint,  Darcy and Gran Don't like Babies, Here Come the Babies, Yankee Doddle, Wheels on the Bus, Down by The Bay, 5 Little Ducks, The Tooth Book, & Here Comes Trouble.
The Things She Says!
  • She says refrigerator like Fidge-ate-door. It always makes me smile. She likes to tell us to put her food in the refrigerator to save her food.
  • She says "You tell me" when we ask her something that she may not know the answer to or doesn't want to say.
  • She says "mines" instead of "mine" and "otay" for "okay." It's too cute! I love when she says "Are you otay?"  She is so caring and thoughtful.
  • Sometimes she'll say "where is my?" instead of "where is Madelyn?" She'll hide in the cabinet or somewhere obvious and loves when you go search for her.
  • She learned to say "excuse me" and is so so cute when she says "excuse me Leia" although she does get frustrated when Leia doesn't understand and doesn't move!
  • She learned what an "echo" is and likes saying it in the bathroom or where ever she hears an echo. She says "ECHO, ECHO" over and over.
  • She started saying "This is DEEEE-lious!" when she eats or drinks something yummy. She is so emphatic when she says this.
  • She hands me food and tells me "mommy, don't eat it!" and reminds me a few more times. I guess I've eaten her food one too many times!
  • Nearly, everyday she'll ask "Where are we going?" If we say nowhere, she'll keep asking I guess hoping for a different response or ask "WHY"! (Maybe we take her TOO many places!)
  • For a while, she would tell us she had a baby in her tummy and one day she said "My tummy is getting big like mommy's" while patting her tummy.
  • When she is in the mood, she'll say "hi" to everyone we walk past on the trail by our house.
  • She started saying "I love you, Daddy"  unprompted when he leaves her room at night.  It melts your heart!
  • She'll say "bless you" even if you sneeze in another room.
  • When she doesn't like a food, she'll say "that hurts my tummy" because that's what Brian says about dairy food she tries to offer him. Funny how they pick things up and use them to their advantage.
  • When she wipes her babies' poopies, she'll tell them "no thank you" which we can only imagine is what some of her teachers say to her or her classmates.
  • She is so cute with her babies. She'll say "baby not listening. You need to listen." or she'll pat her baby's back and say "you okay. shhh"
  • For awhile she was always asking "what he doing" but now she is big on asking "why" over and over.  There is never an end!
Things to Remember
  • She now sleeps in her toddler bed (crib with toddler rail). Brian suggested it a few months after she turned two because she has no desire to sleep in her big girl bed in her room. She likes her toddler bed and is very good about staying in it and waiting for us to come get her. She normally wakes up saying "Daddy, sheep awake!" (which is her alarm clock).
  • In October, Brian started putting Madelyn to bed to get ready for the baby's arrival. It was a hard transition but she did good.  Brian gets her dressed and brushes teeth and I still come up stairs to read books.
  • She weaned from breastfeeding at about 2 years and 1 month telling me that the "milk was all gone."
  • At about 2 years and 3 months, we moved her to face forward in the car.  She loves to watch the stoplights and tell us what color they are and always announces when we are going to go over a railroad.  She likes to kick the seat in front of her but is good about not doing it when someone is in the seat.
  • She loves to be naked!  I don't know how she doesn't get cold.  She also likes to take off her pants and put on underwear but isn't interested in the potty. She is good about not wetting her underpants though.
  • She loves underwear but will ask for a pullup when she needs to go the bathroom :(
  • She loves taking her vitamin and always likes me to take my vitamin too.
  • Now that her hair is long enough, she twirls it which can create knots. (I am not looking forward to the tangles).
  • She loved the "Hey Lolly, Lolly" song from Music Together this past session and asks me to sing about her. She also loved "I've Been Working on the Railroad" and "Sandpiper".
  • She loves to sing songs.  Brian and I had fun compiling a list of all the random songs she breaks out singing. Most of them, she can sing the whole song to but some she just knows the chorus.
List of songs Madelyn breaks out and sings:
  • Rain, Rain Go Away
  • Happy Birthday
  • Yankee Doddle (singing candy instead of handy)
  • 5 Little Ducks

  • Goodbye, So Long, Farewell
  • Leaves are Falling
  • I've Been Working on the Railroad
  • I Had a Little Frog (his name is Tiny Tim)
  • Hey Lolly, Lolly
  • Sandpiper
  • Jingle Bells (she liked to walk around singing and shaking her jingle bell)
  • Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer

She likes to pile stuff up on the couch like a hoarder

Can she fit any more on there??
