We were coming back Monday morning on Route 47 from our long weekend in Lake Geneva. We were the first car stopped at a red light when we heard a large crash behind us and before we knew it we were crashed into. Luckily, the car was in neutral and Brian quickly took his foot off the brake so that we moved a little and wouldn't get the full force of the crash. He then braked so that we wouldn't go too far into the intersection when we got hit again from behind. That hit pushed us through the intersection. Luckily there were no cars going through the intersection at that time so we coasted through it safely. It turns out a semi truck had hit the delivery truck behind us probably going 55 mph (that was the posted speed limit) and hadn't even attempted to stop (he was sighted by the police for two things: 1) following too closely & 2) in adequate breaks).
Brian had some whiplash but was feeling fine the next day. I didn't have any whiplash probably because it seems my side of the car took less of the force. Anyway, there was a community cop on the scene in a minute. I believe he actually saw the accident happen. After the fire trucks and police arrived, they told me to go to the hospital to get checked out (even though I felt fine) since I was 34 weeks pregnant. So since our car was undrivable according to the fireman, we both got transported to Sherman Hospital via ambulance. Yes, I got to ride on a stretcher. First time for me! First I went to a trauma room but they quickly sent me to Labor and Delivery since I was so far along where they monitored me for hours.
They did some tests and since I am RH- and gave me another shot of Rhogam since they noticed some fetal cells in my blood. It's hard to say if the accident caused this or not. They kept me overnight because I was having 4-5 contractions an hour and didn't want me to go into preterm labor. Luckily my contractions were painless and may have been normal for me but there was really no way to know since I hadn't noticed them before.
Overnight my contractions were monitored but they baby looked good so they didn't require me to monitor the baby through the whole night (which is good since the baby's monitor makes lots of noise making it hard to sleep!) They wanted to make sure that my placenta didn't detach so they monitored that. We were discharged on Tuesday morning with a clean bill of health. It's really hard to say if the accident caused the contractions or if I've been having them and just didn't know it since they were essentially painless.
Brian's car may be totaled but we thank God that there was a delivery truck between us and the semi. Now we get to deal with the joys of dealing with the trucking company's auto insurance. Hopefully we can get that figured out and not have to pay our deductible by going through our insurance but you never know. We've never heard of the trucker's insurance so we aren't too optimistic. NO FUN!
Brian had his golf clubs in the trunk and luckily he only lost his 3 wood. Surprisingly we had a case of Spotted Cow (a Wisconsin beer that we love) in the truck and not a single beer bottle broke even though it was right against the hatchback. Strange how stuff happens.
